Advanced Swimmer

There are two alternative Series, each with three levels.

The Advanced Series and Advanced Water Safety Skills. Pupils may take either or both series.

Advanced Series

Level 5 - Bronze Swimmer

The Advanced Series is all about building up stamina, reinforcing the correct starts, turns and finishes for all four competitive strokes and introducing further new skills.

In Level 5 children a speed element is introduced with the aim being to swim 200m in 6 minutes, 50m in 70 seconds. There is also the introduction of tumble turns and then either polo crawl or synchronising with a partner.

Level 6 - Silver Swimmer

Again the speed element remains with pupils needing to swim 400m within 10 minutes and 100m in 2 minutes.

Some intense medley swimming is required along with the introduction of back and front layouts, long distance underwater swimming and further polo crawl and synchronising with a partner.

Level 7 - Gold Swimmer

This is the top level Advanced Swimmer Award and when this standard is attained all should be really chuffed with themselves (Im only glad it wasnt around 30 years ago) !!!

The speed element continues with children having the unenviable task of having to swim 400m within 8 minutes, 100m in 90 seconds and 4 x 50m medley within 5 minutes.

Along with that are the seemingly easy back and front layouts incorporating double somersaults, support sculling, egg beater treading water for 2 minutes, swimming polo crawl while receiving a ball, rotating 360 degrees and passing on four occasions or synchronising with a partner and finally swimming 15m underwater in both the prone and supine position.

No mean feat for anybody I feel!

Advanced Water Safety Skills

Level 5 - Bronze

The Advanced Water Safety Skills is all about developing the ability and confidence to swim in clothes, to build on stamina, survival skills, treading water, surface dives, side stroke, throwing and receiving rescue aids, working together and the H.E.L.P. and Huddle position.

Pupils demonstrate safe entry while wearing clothing, swim, collect a buoyancy aid, show the H.E.L.P. position, tread water, float in the supine position, carry out head and foot first surface dives along with swimming side stroke, simulating the actions of a weak swimmer, performing a reaching rescue, a throwing rescue and being aware of safety rules within a swimming pool environment.

Level 6 - Silver

Pupils demonstrate safe entry while wearing further clothing, swim, collect a buoyancy aid, show the huddle position, tread water, carry out head and foot first surface dives along with life saving backstroke and side stroke.

Also the ability to simulate the actions of a swimmer with a head injury and an arm injury, performing a throwing rescue and a wade rescue.

Level 7 - Gold

Pupils demonstrate safe entry while wearing a T-shirt, long sleeved jumper or sweatshirt long trousers or tracksuit bottoms and then swim, tread water waving one arm, collect a buoyancy aid, show the H. E. L. P and huddle positions.

Again, no mean feat for anybody.
